Vermont NG told to shoot, cops would cover it up?
Tags: nopd, national guardThat's what the Vermont Guardian says, but I'm not putting my full faith in their account:
[…In the New Orleans projects…]
…A man in his forties stepped forward and said those who were forced to find food when government aid failed to arrive were targeted by police: “We got a lot of people who go get food for their [family]. [The police] killed them.”
Another resident, a woman in her late 30s, attributed these alleged instances of police killings to racism. “We got a lot of racist [white] cops that are taking advantage of this fact that it’s supposed to be marshal law.”
With chaos still prevailing in Jefferson Parish, it is impossible to verify these serious charges. It is also difficult to tell if these alleged abuses are localized or widespread; however, similar media reports are emerging in and around New Orleans.
The night before the Guard delivered food to this neighborhood, I rode with them on patrol less than a mile away. Two local officers from the sheriff’s department pulled up to the Guard and told Guard members that “no one on this street is innocent.” They further encouraged the Guard to shoot people, and said they would cover up such events.
To date, members of the Vermont National Guard have not fired a weapon.
